Our Families

What do you know about your family? Do you know your roots? An ongoing BBC TV programme, “Who Do You Think You Are?”, traces the ancestry of various celebrities. And here is an account by a British Council Rome student, Manuela:

I know quite a lot of my roots, in particular, I know best the history of my father’s side of family. My father’s side all came from a city near Rome but when my father was six they moved to Rome, which is how my immediate family ended up here. My grandfather from my father’s side was the member of my family to whom I felt closer  before he died. I grew up next door to him and he often told me a lot of stories about his past. He taught me a lot of things when I was child.

So use the Comments section below to tell us about your families and their origins. Never worry about making mistakes – just write and publish. I will then help with corrections.

  1. Hello everyone,
I’m Serena and i want to talk about my family, specially of Zoe, my little child.
Few days ago, she makes an Birthday’s party, here, in Tivoli Terme, where we live. It was a beautiful party with many Zoe’s friend and Eva’s friend, her daughter. Zoe is 8 years old and Eva is 9 years old.
Naturally, i’ve cooking various cakes, pizza, chips and then all together we has singed the same song of every Birthday’s Party: “Happy birthday to you…”. At the end, when it was too late, she has unwrapped the gifts. How many gifts she received! All the parents getted money such as gifts: these was very appreciated by me and my husband, Massimiliano. Anyway, Niccolò, my first child, ” Eva and Zoe’s Big Brother”, started up the party like a great deejay! Wonderful!
When all the people was leaved out, i’ve polished the dirty flat from chips and coke falled down the floor!
I’m an housewife but i hate making housework!
    Bye

      • Thanks a lot, Mike. It’s a pleasure reading you again on this blog. A few days ago, I passed Cambridge Key Level Exam: it was very simply!
Perhaps I was ready for Pet exam, maybe… 🙂
Now I’m looking for studying Languages and Literature at Tor Vergata University. Three years among “young student”, you know?!
I agree: it’ll be a great experience, the best gift when I am 50!
        The most beautiful regard!
Kisses Mike and I hope to meet you as soon as possible.

  2. My family is a traditional family. My mother and my father lived in two small city, Terricciola and Casciana Terme, where their parents were farmers. I have two brothers who were born and lived the first years of their life in the country. They lived in Terricciola.
My parents and my brothers have lived in another city, Pontedera since 1960. I was born in Pontedera.
Now my brother Alberto is divorced and he has one son. My brother Mauro is married and he has two son and two daughter. My mother and Alberto are retired. Mauro and I are also working.
My father died in 2009 and since then I spend a lot of time with my mother who is ill. before my mother was an excellent cook and friends and family were happy to eat in our house.
Alberto’s son, Fabio, works in the bank.
My niece Ilaria lives in Liverpool and she is working as hostes.
My nephew Mark is thinking to go in the USA where he has a girl friend, who he knew in London.
Alessandro e Laura the Mauro’ s youngest children are students.
When we are all together we are very happy and noisy.

  3. My family isn’t very simple… My mother’s family came mostly from the east of England, a region called East Anglia. But her father was from the opposite end of the country, from an area called Cornwall.

My father’s family is even more divided. His mother came from South Africa and, ultimately, from the north of France. His father’s family came from the northwest of England. But then there is a large clan in the United States, and they are originally from all sorts of places.

So I don’t quite know where to begin. Give me time and I’ll add some more information!

  4. Hi, I’m Tommaso and I talk you about my family history.
The ancestors on the father’s side are originally of Siena, a city in Tuscany. In the 500’s they moved to Marino, a town near Rome, to looking for a better work.
The ancestors on my mother’s side are originally of Marino and my parents knew themselves in this town in 1964.

My brother was born in 1974 his name is Matteo and now he are living in Dubai two weeks a month.
My family, firts of all on my father’s side, are known in Marino with the nickname “Temperino” but I didn’t know the real true.

If I should born again I’d like the same family !

    Bye
    Tommaso

  5. Very good Manuela! Now, would anyone else like to tell us about their families?
