    Giulia Writes:

The film Apocalypse Now was inspired by the book by J. Conrad “Heart of Darkness”. The film was directed by Francis Ford Coppola. It stars Marlon Brandon as Kurtz and Martin Sheen as Captain Willard. Other famous actors also appeared, including Dennis Hopper and Robert Duvall. The film won 2 Oscars: for Best Cinematography (Vittorio Storaro) and for Best Sound.

The movie is set in Vietnam during the war. It was filmed on location in the Philippines.

During the Vietnam War, Captain Willard, a special operative, is ordered by military intelligence to find a special forces commander, Kurtz, who has flipped out and established has own maverick army in Cambodia. Willard will have to kill Kurtz and to put an end to his madness.

I recommend Apocalypse Now because it’s not a simple war film, but a journey into oneself and a film on civilization. There is a clear contrast between civil human (USA) and native (Vietnam). Storaro highlights this aspect; he was using the contrast between natural light and artificial light. Also he used colours and natural elements to underline the psychological aspect of the two main characters and the purification of Captain Willard during his trip.

I hope to see and understand this movie.
    Best regards

I share my last science fiction film with you: “Prometheus” (2012), directed by Ridley Scott (director of “Alien”, “Blade Runner”). Written by Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof and starring by Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron.

In ancient time, a spaceship departed from an unknown planet and arrived on the Earth. A humanoid alien drank an iridescent liquid and then dissolved. The remains of the alien fell into a waterfall. The alien’s DNA strand mixed with the water.
After million years, in 2089, in Scotland, the archaeologists Elizabeth Shaw and Charlie Holloway discovered a star map, that matches others from several unconnected ancient cultures. They interpreted this as an invitation from humanity’s forerunners, the “Engineers of our humanity”.
A team of scientists and explorers travelled in the universe, towards the mysterious planet, searching the origins of human life. Instead, they found a dark, twisted world that hides a terrifying volition, the aliens wanted destroy the Earth…and all mankind!

If you watch Prometeus in english language, you can learn a lot of scientific terminology. I like this kind of science fiction film, I consider Prometheus an epic adventure with spectacular action and mind-blowing visual effects, but I don’t love this theory of origin of humanity, I hope in a better reality!

Hi, I love seeing a feel-good films with my friends at the cinema or at home. My favourite films often have Julia Roberts as principal actress. For me she’s the best Hollywood actress because She get into a role perfectly leading to success her story.

Pretty woman, with Richard Gere, is a cult film of the 90s. The famous love story between Hollywood hooker Vivian Ward and Edward Lewis, a wealthy businessman, started as a employment relationship, infact she had to be his escort for several business and social events, but they fall in love during the week they spend toghether .

When I am sad or depressed I see Vivian’s adventures, her desire for redemption , her happy ending, and I think my problems and worries will be solved, and also I will have my happy ending.

    1. mikiroma says:

Many thanks for your comment, Chiara!

      Some small corrections:
      “Julia Roberts as lead actress”
“because she gets into a role perfectly which leads to her success
indeed, she was his escort for several business and social events”
“and even I will have my happy ending.”

The film “Lion” is based on the non-fiction book “The long way home” by Saroo Brierley. It was directed by Garth Davis in 2016, and filmed on location in India and Australia.

It stars Dev Patel as adult Saroo, the main protagonist of this drama. Patel is also famous thanks to his part of Jamal in “The Millionaire”.

The film starts with a little Saroo who plays with his big brother Guddu in a remote village of Northern India. One day Saroo goes to work with his brother by train. When they arrive, Guddu says to Saroo to wait for him right there, on a bench in the train station. But Saroo gets in a fixed empty train where he falls asleep. When he wakes up he discovers that while he was sleeping the train departed. It has gone such a distance that he doesn’t know where he is. After three days of trip he arrives in Kolkata, and turns up in an orphanage where he stays for some months. Then he is adopted by an Australian couple, with which he lives until he is twenty-year-old. At this point he started to search for his origin’s family using Google Maps, and he find its only after a lot of researches. The scene of the meeting with his mother is the most touching of all the film.

I strongly recommend this film because it tells how the call of our own origins is always very strong. Even if, in various ways, the life has reserved good things for us.

    Bye Mike,
    see you tomorrow.

    1. mikiroma says:

Many thanks for this, Melania! A couple of corrections:

Yesterday I went to the cinema and I saw “ La la land”. It is an American musical drama written and directed by Damien Chazelle. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone star in this wonderful film that has received 14 Oscar nominations like only “Titanic” and “All about Eva” had done.

La la land was filmed in Los Angeles and it is also set here, nowadays, but it seems to be timeless.

The film is about the story of Mia and Sebastian. She is a struggling actress and he is an aspiring jazz pianist. They begin a whirlwind romance while they are trying to pursue their dreams in Los Angeles. They are really happy together till their careers pull them in different directions.

I recommend it because it isn’t the usual love story that we find in several musical or dancing films. The story is original and not at all predictable. I think that everybody should see it also for its direction: is a masterpiece!

    See you Saturday,

    Film “MAMMA MIA”
I like this film beacuse there are many beautiful songs, many dances, and beautiful scenes. And film is vey much joyful and full of happiness.
It is the story of a girl named Sophy who is preparing her wedding. For this occasion she would like to know her father. She lives with her mother only. Secretly reading the diary of her mother she learns that her mother has fall in love with three men. Therefore according to her one of the three could be her father.
Sophy writes each of them a letter inviting them to her wedding. But she includes the mother’s signature. Her mother doesn’t know anything about it.
They accept the invitation and all of them come. The story is full of surprises. Sophy doesn’t know who is her father.
Sophy’s mother, Donna, is really confused. The wedding day, while they were on the altar, they decide not to marry, but decide to begin to live together. In that moment one of the three men (Sam) stands up and declares his love for Donna and they get married instantly.
The story is surreal, it’s a comedy. The actors are very famous (Maryl Streep, Prierce Bosnan; Colin Firth etc…) and they are very good. The songs of Abba were used in the movie. And they are fantastic!

    1. mikiroma says:

Thanks very much for this, Anna! A few corrections:

  8. Hy Mike and others cinephiles!

I’d like recommend you a movie, come out recently, that I’ve definitely loved: ‘Perfect day’ directed by Léon de Aranoa, with Benicio Del Toro, Tim Robbins, Olga Kurylenko…

It was shot in the Balkans and the events happened in 1995.
It’s a fiction but based on real experiences.

A fat dead body in the bottom of a well, a group of a humanitarian mission who tries to extract him to safe the only drinkable water for a village’s inhabitants, the lack of resources, the military and burocracy foolishness, the minefields: these are some of ingredients of a movie dramatic and touching but, at the same time, unbelievable fun.

    You shouldn’t miss it.

    1. mikiroma says:

Many thanks for this movie review, Filomena!
      A couple of small corrections:

“others cinephiles” should be “other cinephiles”

“a movie, come out recently” => “a movie that has come out recently”

“who tries to extract him to safe the only drinkable water for a village’s inhabitants” => “who tries to get the body out to save the only drinkable water for the inhabitants of a village”

“the military and burocracy foolishness” => “military and bureaucratic foolishness”

      I hope these help!

  9. Livia says:

Hello everyone! A movie I have recently seen is “Night of the Living Dead” directed by George Romero. I state that I’m not a cinema expert and it’s a film that I would never have seen on my own (I don’t like scary movies). During the film, I breathed a cemetery atmosphere: I felt a sort of existential emptiness, powerlessness in front of death and greyness. The noise of the zombies look like a funeral lament. This film could be a representation of a way of seeing life: this life is dragging like a zombie and there is full consciousness of being powerless in front of death. It left me with a bad feeling. I recommend this film also to everyone that want to improve own cinema culture. For many people this film decreed the birth of the zombie genre. It’s a film that doesn’t scare anyone today, just a fearful like me.

Hi! One of the best film that i have seen is “A Beautiful Mind”
It is a film directed by Ron Howard in 2001 and It is an American biopic film based on the life of John Nash, a Nobel Laureate in Economics, starring by Russel Crowe.

The story begins at the Princeton Uvinersity in 1947, when John Nash stands out as intellectually brilliant but introverted student.
One evening at a pub from a challenge in relation to a blonde girl
,in which he is defeated, Nash find the idea about some mathematical principles the will cancel all previous studies.
Received with all the honors at the prestigious MIT , was offered him the delicate task of decoder secret codes in the period of Cold War.
In those years the scientist falls progressively in an obsessive state that was diagnosed as schizophrenia.

I love this film because it tells about a true story of a brilliant genius of our times, which i had the good fortune to meet and listen to live.
It was impressed me for the physical strength and reason, which he is able to fight the disease.

    Hi everybody,
I love cinema very much and my favourite directors are Clint Eastwood and Woody Allen! One of my favourite movie is “Whatever Works”. It’s a movie written and directed by Woody Allen in 2009. The movie is a romantic comedy and tells the story of a physics professor, Boris, who tries to commit suicide by jumping from the window of his apartment in New York. He doesn’t die, but his extreme action will make him lose the use one of his legs. The teacher is always sad because he divorced from his rich wife and decided not to compete for the Nobel Prize. This disappointment leads him to have a cynical behaviour towards everybody. But his life will be revolutionized by a girl who stop him on the street and asks for food. At the beginning Boris is very cynical and
unsympathetic with the girl, but in the end this girl is able to make him fall in love with her, to become his wife, and make him appreciate his life.
From an overall perspective I can say that this movie is very funny but I also think that watching it more carefully you can get lots of hidden meanings like that life is to short not to be fully lived, whatever makes you happy.

    Hello everybody,
Woody Allen is one of my favorite directors and a movie of his I like is Midnight in Paris. It is a romantic comedy written and directed in 2011.The movie tells the story of a successful writer of novels, who goes on holiday to Paris with his fiancée. There, he travels back in time, to the 1920s, each night at midnight and meet same famous figures of the past such as Picasso, Dalì and Hemingway who help him to write his new novel. He knows also the Picasso’s lover, to whom he falls in love and … (I would not tell you the end of the movie). For this movie Woody Allen won a Oscar in 2012. I suggest you watching it because the actors who play the famous characters are very good, the story is so romantic and Paris in the background is really wonderful.

    Hi Michael,
Recently, and at the beginning not willingly, I saw a movie “Gifted Hands,” with Cuba Gooding Jr.
Is a true story about Benjamin Carson, a professor of neurosurgery, oncology and pediatrics.
The sacrifice and the education they have learned from his mother, are the key to a successful career in neurosurgery.
The life of Ben Carson ” the remarkable surgeon who gives children a second chance at life” talks about love, faith and hard work .
At the end of the film I have searched in Wikipedia and learned that Ben Carson has written an autobiography that inspired the film.
So I decided to buy this book online and read it in English.

Hi! The last movie that i saw is Man on the Moon.
It is a film directed by Milos Forman in 1999 and It talks about the eccentric life of Andy Kaufman, an American comedian starring Jim Carrey.
He was an eccentric character and out of each scheme.
Kaufman used to surprise the audience in different ways, improvising disputes and fights or creating a capricious alter ego, the irascible singer Tony Clifton.
The film’s title is inspired by a beautiful song by REM written some years before in memory of Kaufman.

I love this film because is an incredible true and funny story, for the genius of the protagonist and for the wonderful interpretation of Jim Carrey.

    Good morning everyone!
My favourite film is Jerry MacGuire.
    That following is the plot:
Tom Cruise as Jerry Macguire is an sports successfull agent. After a lot of work around the America he was hit by strong stress and has decided to write a “programmatic relation” entitled “The Things We Think and Do Not Say: The Future of Our Business”.
In this relation he talks about dishonesty in the sports management and how things should change. When he distributes the copy of it, in his Agency, his co-worked read and applaud the relation but the following day the manager fires him.
Now he is forced to start from scratch.
Will follow him only an accounting and a young athlete is not yet known, With the accountant (Renée Zellweger) he will fall in love and with the young athlete (Cuba Gooding Jr.) he will return to the success, rediscovering love and passion for people and for his work.
The most beautiful phrases in the film are:
    1) “The secret of this business are the relationships, personal relationships.”
    2) I do not have all the answers. In my life, the failures were as many victories, but I love my wife, I love my life and I wish you success as mine.
